My insider tip
Gabala (Qabala) is a small city in northern Azerbaijan set in beautiful surroundings at the base of forest-draped mountains. Its well-developed infrastructure includes the Tufandag Winter–Summer Resort attracting skiers and hikers with its modern network of ropeways/cable-cars. But did you know that nearby was once the capital of Caucasian Albania, a powerful ancient nation? The archaeological ruins of that now-destroyed city are near Chukhur Gabala village and include imposing gate towers from the former citadel walls.
