My insider tip
Azerbaijan’s time-honoured tea culture runs deep in the national psyche, a profound symbol of hospitality as well as a practical form of refreshment. So, no trip to Azerbaijan is complete without a trip to the Lankaran and Astara regions, home to the country’s first and largest tea plantations. You can visit the factories to learn about the tea making process and, of course, relax with a well-brewed cuppa at a local chaykhana’s (tea houses), served with a thin lemon slice. Yes, the lemons grow here too.
