My insider tip
Chirag Gala is an impressive shard of fortress ruin originally dating from the 4th-6th century. It sits high on a mountain ridge looking down upon the Caspian foreshore and was once part of a large network of similar structures between Derbent and Baku. These provided early warning systems to guard against enemy invasions, communicating to fellow defensive positions using fire beacons. That’s probably the reason for its name: "Chirag” means lamp, “Gala” means castle.
